Rice Lake SURVIVOR Railroad Track Scale Case Study

Full Service Recycling

ABC Corp. offers a comprehensive recycling program from pallets, paper, cardboard and plastic, to ferrous and non-ferrous metals. ABC processes more than 1.5 billion pounds of scrap each year.

Of those 1.5 billion pounds, 650,000 tons is ferrous metal. The ferrous metal is used to produce a wide variety of products for foundry and mill melt applications. ABC supplies a large amount of quality industrial scrap and obsolete grades to meet the specific needs of customers. A large part of the business at ABC is non-ferrous scrap – 100 million pounds per year to be exact. The different types of copper and brass alloys are used to create products for mills, foundries, smelters and refiners.

As ABC corp continues to grow, they are expanding their aluminum processing capabilities and broadening their involvement with stainless steel and nickel alloys. The facility processes ferrous and non ferrous scrap metal. Once the metal has been processed, it’s loaded onto rail cars and transported for distribution to steel mills and foundries.

In ABC's specific example it costs about $800 for one railroad car to travel to the distribution center. With an average of 200 cars per month, it was imperative that each car weigh as close to the legal limit as possible to maximize efficiency and avoid costly fines levied for overweight rail cars.

The rail cars are filled at the recycling plant and then moved to the rail scale to be weighed. Previously, cars were weighed using a much older pit-type scale that was no longer dependable because of its age.

ABC corp was looking for a heavy-duty, legal-for-trade scale to weigh a variety of rail cars, Rice Lake’s SURVIVOR® PL Series track scale was the ideal choice. Another benefit with the SURVIVOR PL Series track scale is the ability to customize the scale to fit existing foundations. For ABC Corp, this lowered the cost and allowed for faster installation.

Now, with the new SURVIVOR PL Series, ABC Corp can fill a rail car at the plant and move it to the scale and weigh the entire car. If the car is underweight, they use a large magnetic crane to add more scrap metal to the car until they get it to within 5,000 pounds of the maximum weight allowed.
